Mammal Collection

A row of ground-squirrel study skins.
Study skins of Cascade golden-mantled ground squirrels (Callospermophilus saturatus).

We have approximately 39,000 mammal specimens in the research collection. Most of the mammal specimens are prepared as study skins and/or skulls. We also have 6,600 post-cranial skeletons (i.e., the skeleton other than the skull), 500 bacula and 143 fluid-preserved specimens. The fluid specimens are mostly mammal embryos and are not available for dissection. We take tissue samples on all incoming specimen which are stored at -80F.

This collection comprises nearly 450 species across 78 families. The majority of our mammal collection is from Washington (26,000 specimens), Idaho (4,000 specimens) and Oregon (3,500 specimens) though we have mammals from all over the world.
